Our world is riven by crisis, discord, and conflict. War has returned to Europe, the global economy faces unprecedented stressors, and democracy and cherished civil liberties are under assault around the world, all while the looming specter of climate crisis grows closer with every passing moment.
Even so, it isn’t all doom and gloom. Courageous individuals and communities are rising up to defend their rights, organized labor has developed a dynamism not seen in decades, and archaic systems of control and domination are being questioned and rejected by millions of people around the globe.
Foreign Missives is a space to analyze and digest these rapidly shifting dynamics shaping our world, mixing introspective personal commentaries with informed analysis of global affairs to expose and loudly condemn those craven institutions and individuals working to set back the clock on our cherished universal liberties, and most importantly, to celebrate the victories for human dignity won by hard-fought struggles worldwide.
Chaos and upheaval have torn through our world before, but visionaries back then seized the opportunities created by that chaos to broaden the space for global liberty, equality, and freedom. They consciously refused to sit by and “trust the process,” and chose instead to actively bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice, its length or trajectory be damned.
We can, must, and will do the same.
Indulgence for the royalists, cry certain men, mercy for the villains! No! mercy for the innocent, mercy for the weak, mercy for the unfortunate, mercy for humanity.
Maximilien Robespierre
